Materials

We aim to offer the best eco-friendly device protection on Earth and for Earth, and the materials we use are a big part of achieving that.

All our products are made from recycled plastic materials and/or long-lasting full-grain leather - all made without compromising on quality, functionality, and design. But how can leather be sustainable when it comes from cows? And why do we use recycled plastic instead of other alternatives like bioplastics? Let’s break it down.

Full-grain leather

All of our leather products are made from full-grain leather, which is the finest quality form of leather and the strongest. Due to the material’s durability, full-grain leather prolongs the product life cycle, which is an important step to saving on resources and thereby minimising the environmental footprint. It also ensures a product that will not only last a long time but also look great for ages, as it develops a beautiful patina with time.

Upcycled and locally sourced

All of the hides we use as raw-material are by-products from the meat and dairy industry that would otherwise go to waste.

Furthermore, all our hides are sourced locally in India. In contrast to places like Brazil (Amazon rainforest), there is no forest clearing due to cattle ranching in India which means we have eliminated deforestation from our leather supply chain.

Recycled plastic

Have you thought about the global environmental impact of plastic phone cases? Almost every smartphone comes with a phone case. Taking that into consideration, it’s no wonder that over 2 billion plastic phone cases are sold each year. Unfortunately, many of those cases are made from single-use plastics and end up in landfills, or worse, our oceans.

We work to reduce plastic pollution by replacing single-use plastic products with products made from recovered and recycled plastic materials. All our TPU cases, silicone cases, rPET bags and vegan leather products are made from recycled plastic and are 100% recyclable.

Certified recycled materials

Our recycled products are verified by GRS (Global Recycled Standard) – a voluntary product standard for tracking and verifying the content of recycled materials in a product. With the GRS certification, you can be sure that our products hold both a verified recycled content of the product certification and a verified responsible social, environmental, and chemical practices certification of their production.

Why not plant-based plastics

While we recognize the importance of innovating and inventing new sustainable materials like plant-based plastic—also known as bioplastic or biobased plastic - we have chosen recycled plastic for a reason. Through our research, we discovered that recycled and recyclable plastic is the most eco-friendly choice for our product range and if we want to help create a nature free of plastic.

As you probably know, nature is drowning in plastic waste and it does not go away easily. That’s why we need to prioritise recovering and recycling the plastic we already have before we employ new eco-friendly alternatives. Furthermore, plastic recycling systems are already well established in most countries. The same cannot be said for biodegradable plastic, making it unsure if these products degrade in a timely manner and do not harm the environment they are put in. Furthermore, bioplastics rely on feedstocks and according to WWF, there is no list of ‘sustainable’ or ‘not sustainable’ feedstocks, due to the overall complexity of the choice of feedstocks and the potential for trade-offs.
